By 2PM ET, OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page, noting that ChatGPT, the API, and its text-to-video generator Sora were experiencing high error rates. By 6:15PM ET, Sora was fully operational again, and APIs were starting to recover. However, OpenAI was still working on an overall fix for ChatGPT and its APIs.
Microsoft, OpenAI's exclusive cloud provider, reported a power issue at one of its datacenters that started around the same time as the OpenAI problems. This issue affected services across North America, including Xbox cloud gaming. By 5PM ET, Microsoft reported that it had fully restored power to the affected datacenter.
According to Microsoft, customers in the South Central US experienced storage latency, timeouts, or HTTP 500 errors due to a power incident. Mitigation measures were applied, and recovery validation was in progress for the impacted services. Further updates were expected in 60 minutes or sooner, depending on the situation.
