Nvidia's RTX 50-series GPUs are making their debut, with the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 dropping on January 30th. These will be followed by the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 in February. The new series is expected to be powerful, although not quite the generational leap that the RTX 4090 was over its predecessor. The real game-changer, however, may be DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, a software trick that uses AI to predictively generate frames, improving gaming performance at higher resolutions.

RTX 5090: A Closer Look

Tom Warren's review of the $1,999 RTX 5090 indicates it's expectedly a powerhouse. The Verge's Sean Hollister was impressed with the two-slot RTX 5090 Founders Edition GPU when he installed it into his small-form-factor PC.

DLSS 4: The Software Revolution

The introduction of DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation may be as big a story as the hardware itself. This latest version of DLSS uses AI to predictively generate frames, allowing games to run at higher resolutions without the same framerate hit. Gamers using RTX 40-series GPUs and trying out DLSS 4 in Cyberpunk 2077 have reported significant improvements.

Early Access to DLSS 4

Owners of last-gen Nvidia 40-series GPUs can already download and install DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation software via the Nvidia app. Cyberpunk 2077's newly-launched patch 2.21 adds support for DLSS 4, providing a graphically-intense game for early testing.

Along with the 50-series GPUs comes DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, a software trick that may be just as big a story as the hardware itself. This latest version of DLSS uses AI to predictively generate frames, making it possible to run games at higher resolutions without taking the same framerate hit they would without DLSS 4 turned on.
