The lawsuit, filed by Public Citizen on behalf of the Alliance for Retired Americans, American Federation of Government Employees, and the Service Employees International Union, comes after reports that Musk and DOGE gained access to federal payment systems and millions of Americans' Social Security numbers. The suit asserts that the Treasury Department violated the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Internal Revenue Code's regulations on taxpayer information by allowing Musk and DOGE access to these systems. The complaint states that people who must share information with the federal government should not be forced to share information with Elon Musk or his DOGE, and federal law says they do not have to.

Political Concerns

Several lawmakers have called for investigations into Musk's apparent takeover of the Treasury Department. Senators Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren wrote to Bessent, demanding to know whether he had given Musk full access to the federal government's payment systems. They expressed concern that any politically-motivated meddling in these systems could risk severe damage to the country and the economy.

Security Measures

Both senators also questioned the information security measures taken to ensure that Musk and DOGE's access to government payment systems does not result in hackers and foreign spies breaching or otherwise gaining access to these systems. Warren specifically asked about safeguards to prevent system abuse and measures to protect Americans' sensitive data, including Social Security numbers.

To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy. I can think of no good reason why political operators who have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law would need access to these sensitive, mission-critical systems.
