Apex Legends was a surprise launch that quickly gained traction among gamers. The game's unique blend of elements from Overwatch and Fortnite, coupled with its free-to-play model, made it an instant hit, drawing tens of millions of players.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson, while discussing Q3 2025 earnings, outlined a long-term vision for Apex Legends. He hinted at significant updates planned post the new Battlefield launch and suggested that Apex Legends may evolve into 'Apex 2.0' in the future. This points to a commitment to continue developing the game for a decade or more.
Despite its success, Apex Legends has faced challenges. EA executives admitted that the game's revenue fell short of expectations. In response, Apex Legends introduced a 'Launch Royale,' revisiting the original map and characters. The game also faces competition from other free-to-play games like Fortnite and the upcoming Overwatch Classic.
Our expectation is that Apex will be also one of those franchises [that last 10, 20, 30 years], and that some time, on a longer term time horizon, there will be an even bigger more meaningful update to that experience, an Apex 2.0 if you will. This will not be the last incarnation of Apex. - EA CEO Andrew Wilson
