Heinlein's book and Verhoeven's 1997 Starship Troopers film have both faced criticism for seemingly glorifying military fascism. However, it is now generally accepted that Verhoeven's film was intended as a satirical critique of the book's jingoistic themes. In a Kennedy Center interview, Verhoeven expressed his intention to expose the potential evil behind such over-the-top nationalism.
Blomkamp has previously attempted to make movies in other sci-fi franchises, including a sequel to Verhoeven-directed RoboCop, called RoboCop Returns. He also planned a new Alien franchise film, but the project was put on hold in favor of Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant. Most recently, Blomkamp directed Gran Turismo.
