Segway Recalls Ninebot Max Scooters Due to Safety Concerns

Segway, a leading provider of electric scooters, has issued a recall for two of its models, the Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP. This action was prompted by reports of a faulty mechanism that can cause the scooter's handlebars and stem to fold while in use, creating a fall hazard. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has been informed of the issue, which has already resulted in 68 reported failures and 20 injuries, including lacerations and broken bones. Despite the severity of the issue, Segway is not replacing the faulty scooters. Instead, the company is offering owners a free maintenance kit to rectify the problem.

Scope of the Recall

The recall affects approximately 220,000 scooters sold since January 2020. These scooters were sold through various outlets, including Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, Sams Club, and Amazon. The Ninebot Max G30P can be recognized by its gray and yellow color scheme, while the Max G30LP model is black with yellow accents.

Segway's Response to the Issue

In response to the reported failures and injuries, Segway has urged consumers to immediately stop using the recalled scooters. However, the company is not offering replacements. Instead, Segway is providing owners with a free maintenance kit. This kit includes instructions and tools for tightening the folding mechanism on either model, and maintaining it to ensure the folding mechanism remains locked while the scooters are being ridden.
